Its body is elongated with a cylindrical cross-section, and the upper jaw extends forward in a slender manner, forming a long stick-like shape. The eyes are notably large, and there are faint teeth present on both jaws, which gradually disappear as the fish matures. The body is covered with scales that have 2 to 5 small spines, but these spines diminish in size and eventually vanish as the fish grows.
